The empty chair

Your chair is back in its accustomed place

But empty now.

No more I’ll see your dear, dear face

That looked on me with so much love

In all the years we shared,

You, who had always been my strength

Slowly began to falter and to fade

Until the time arrived

When you were given into others’ care.

And now the final parting

Has taken you from all of us

Who loved you, and who love you still

Until that day when we will once more be united,

My dear and only love.
