Summer Tragedy

A helicopter flew over last night

Flashing red and amber.

White searchlight stabbing blackness

Along the canal.

What was it seeking?

The perpetrator of a dreadful crime?

We locked our doors

Against the possibility.

Today the answer came

The body of a surfer

Washed up at Mooloolaba,

His eighteen years gone out

With the tide.
