Street Party

The earth was dry and dusty

Storm clouds appeared each day

Lightning flashed and thunder rolled –

But the rain just stayed away.

It was getting close to Christmas

And a party had been planned,

A simple little gathering,

The neighbours thought it grand.

Food and drink were handed round,

Conversation ebbed and flowed.

The atmosphere became electric

For the topics were eclectic –

Politics, football, cricket, tennis,

Even the works of C.J. Dennis.

All were relaxed and feeling fine;

Then the sun lost all its shine

And raindrops fell, how ironic,

Even though they were a tonic.

Partygoers were not dismayed,

Umbrellas up, they sat and stayed

Until at last, all quite replete,

They left that party in the street.

It goes to show, whate’er the weather,

People love to get together.
