St. Patrick’s Day

We’ve gathered here to celebrate St.Patrick’s day

But what is it that brings us here?

We are a funny lot.

We’ll wear the green and sing the songs

That don’t come from Australia

We’ve nothing much in common

With that saint in his regalia.

Except one thing and that’s the faith

That has been handed down

Through all the many ancestors

Who’ve hailed from County Down

Or any other spot within that little emerald isle

It’s the tie that really binds us close

And makes our lives worthwhile.

Now, my grandad came from Cavan

And that’s why I’m a mick

But my childhood was, like most of yours

Ruled by the blackthorn stick.

Now, happily, those days are gone

And we are much more free

We pay tribute to the Irish upon each family tree.

And give thanks to all who struggled

To make a better life,

To cast aside the bitterness that causes woe and strife.

So here’s to you, Saint Patrick,

You’re the one who started this

And we hope one day to join you

To share your eternal bliss.
