Reality check

When Romeo wooed Juliet

To profess his everlasting love

He had to reach her balcony

Situated high above.

He was young, and fit and strong

And never had a thought of failing

Unlike me, who, unsuccessfully

Tried to climb the verandah railing.

I was quite sure I had my keys

When I went out and left the house.

When I returned, where had they gone?

And what’s more, where was my spouse?

“Oh never mind, I’ll climb the rail”-

A big mistake  had to wail,

For, no matter how I tried

I simply couldn’t get inside.

The railings really were too high,

I couldn’t do it, me oh my,

Some challenges are just too weighty

Especially once you have turned eighty.
