The newspaper is delivered every morning
Most days it hits the ground just after flve
And upon its safe arrival
Does depend my own survival
For the crossword makes my brain come quite alive.
Now the crossword must be cryptic
For its clues are quite elliptic
It’s a challenge that really makes my day
But before I reach the puzzle
It’s a never-ending tussle
To tear the plastic wrapping right away.
Why the paper’s wrapped in plastic
Which is not at all elastic
Is itself another puzzle with no clue
But the darn thing’s rolled so tight
It is something of a fight
And the air resounds with words that are quite blue.
When the going’s getting rough
And the task is quite too tough
For one pair of hands unaided
I begin to feel quite jaded
And I’m sick of all this caper
I’ll just cancel out the paper
And I’ll no more fume and fret
I’ll just get the puzzle from the Internet.
