My ancestry’s English and Irish
I’ve affection for my forebears' land
But my home is in Australia,
The country I love
And I simply cannot understand
Why we cling to the past
When it comes to our flag
Which says nothing about who we are
In an era of change, why do we need
A symbol so far removed from this place
And its people around the world;
Does it make us feel proud,
Do we stand up with head bowed
When this banner of ours is unfurled?
We’re no longer an outpost of Britain,
But a nation distinct and apart,
So I’d like to see our own symbol
That comes from this country’s heart.
An emblem that is quite Australian-
One that’s distinctive and true
That we’d recognise with stars in our eyes-
Like the iconic Rock, Uluru.
