Only a dog

That night the old man died

I couldn’t sleep.

Restless

I roamed the house

At midnight, seeking the coolness

Of the dim verandah.

Indifferent stars glittered

Hard as diamonds.

Out of the darkness

Loomed a large and silent shape-

The faithful dog, pressing her nose

Into my lap, gave comfort.

She died this morning.

We are all bereft.
