Moon Night

Moonlight’s silver fingers are tracing patterns on the grass

And I alone, not sleeping, waiting for the night to pass

Am remembering other moon nights, in winter, cold with frost

And warm, soft, summer evenings when my love and I were lost

In the magic of the moment.

But now, though sleep eludes me, I am dreaming of those days

When the future stretched before us, hidden in a misty haze

By courtship’s sweet romancing, which held us both in thrall

To live, our lives together, that was our all-in-all.

Perfume of the garden is wafted on a breeze

And I hear a night bird calling from shelter of the trees

As the moon, serene, majestic, still lingers in the sky

And I gaze in awe and wonder as a star falls from on high.

Now light is slowly changing from silver into gold

As night retreats from morning and sees the day unfold

For the moon has left her rival, and her shadows slowly creep

Away to the horizon - and at last I fall asleep
