We cling together close for comfort you and I

The singing birds that charmed the day have flown

Beating their golden wings against the bars

They slipped the catch. How cold the day has grown.

We may just glimpse them both from time to time

As homeward drawn they flutter near to rest

Upon a sheltering branch that upward climbs

And spreads a leafy screen against the west.

But as the summer days stretch out in endless gold

Their sweetest songs for us will surely cease

As ranging further, growing yet more bold

They test the distance, and the sleeping peace.

Hold me, my love, the silent dawn is chill

The night is long, but day is longer still.
