I had a conversation with a kookaburra -
Truth to tell, it was one-sided -
I was trying just to ascertain
Why had this bird decided
To perch upon the verandah rail
And then upon a chair?
I had yet to be convinced
I was the attraction there.
Alas, the facts were quite mundane.
If the kookaburra could complain
It would have told me "I am here
For a peewit gave me cause to fear".
I really loathe that pesky bird,
So black and white, it is absurd
That it should chase this Aussie icon,
And do its very best to frighten.
The visiting kookaburra was quite young
And didn't bother with a song.
I did my best to soothe it down,
I don't know if it could frown,
But it looked at me with great intent -
Did it understand just what I meant
By saying many a calming word?
For I knew exactly what occurred.
My visitor looked at me once more
Before I left and closed the door.
When I looked again I was quite alone.
To my relief the bird had flown.
But it left behind a parting gift,
Which didn't make my spirits lift.
