The paper is late
And you’re facing your mate
Across the breakfast table
You’re feeling the need
Of something to read
Apart from the marmalade label.
For the paper brings news –
Though most of it’s bad –
But there is one item
That makes you feel glad.
So you make a quick search
And the pages you rustle;
Here at last is the Times’ crossword puzzle.
‘Use it or lose it’ we’re told
Especially when growing old,
So keep your brain active
With puzzles quite cryptic –
Though they may drive you crazy
With those clues elliptic.
