Canberra Autumn

A blaze of colour by the lake

Trees clad in red and flame and gold

Tributes to another hemisphere

Disdainful of the olive green

That nature has bestowed upon this land.

Astride the hill the flagpole proudly stands

The standard blowing stiffly in the breeze

Bearing aloft the Southern Cross

And the emblem of another distant place.

In this, our nation’s capital

The colonial cringe lives on.
